au revoir mon amour!

The last few weeks of being in Paris flew by. I wanted to enjoy the weather and 10pm sunset (no joke), visit my favorite places and check out some new places all while packing and saying goodbyes.

A few things I did the last few weeks, in no particular order:
...Versailles gardens again with Andrew.
...falafel with Andrew and Melissa.
...American Church in Paris, which I am really going to miss.
...date with Andrew at Relais Gascon.
...a long, Parisian style coffee with Becca.
...roomie dinner at Pub Saint-Germain (17 Rue de l'Ancienne Comedie, 6th) and a final street-stand crepe for dessert of course.
...a visit and tour of the UNESCO House.
...running, running, running, all over the city. I love seeing the city by foot.
...Sleigh Bells concert at Social Club.
...last meeting with Marion at Le Loir dans la Théière (3 rue de Rosiers, 4th). This is the cutest cafe in the Marais, hands down. It is named after the dormouse in Alice in Wonderland who gets dunked in the teapot.
...Sex and the City 2 with the girls, not as good as the first but still a fun night.
...shopping at Uniqlo, the Japanese version of American Apparel. They have bike shorts!!
...HEC Social and Sustainable Business Conference with Andrew; some really great and inspiring speakers.
...last few times tutoring Stanislas and babysitting for the Phan's :(
...Bois de Bologne, the huge park bordering zone 1 in Paris to the northwest.
...Musée d'Histoire Naturelle, the natural history museum in Paris. SO cool.
...Bible studies with wonderful Chrisitan women.
...McDonald's. Ok, I am ashamed to admit this, but it is so much better in France and Parisians LOVE it. I have never been to a McDonald's in the city that was not busy. They make a mean McFlurry with Daim and caramel.
...Kara's graduation from Le Cordon Bleu (she is officially a French pastry chef!) and celebration dinner at the Italian restaurant Barlotti (reallllllllyyy good mozzarella and tomato stuffed gnocchi; 35 Place du Marché Saint-Honoré, 1st).
...Disneyland Paris with Andrew, Skylar and Charlotte.
...picnic with wine in the Champ de Mars under the Eiffel Tower and the stars (so cool at night, esp. on warm nights).

A few things I have forgotten to mention over the year that I don't want to leave out!
...Jardin du Luxembourg: such a beautiful park in the 6th.
...OPA: one of our favorite clubs near the Bastille.
...George V hotel visit (owned by the Four Seasons): beautiful hotel, I wish I would have had the time for a coffee in their beautiful cafe.
...Le Pin-Up, a really unique and intimate bar/downstairs lounge. It is decorated in a sort of shabby chic style, and one of may favorite nights out in Paris was dancing downstairs with Emily and Kara.
...Brioche Dorée: Andrew's favorite sandwich take away restaurant, all over the city.
...Monet Giverny Gardens: I didn't get to do this, but I heard about them and wish that I did have the time! These are the gardens Monet painted and where he lived, in Giverny.
...Musée de l'Orangerie: houses Monet's large water lily collection, as well as some great exhibits.
...Le Styx, one of our favorite restaurants from back when we studied in Paris in 2006
...Marché de la Création Bastille markets
...Musée Rodin. BEAUTIFUL house and gardens filled with a great collection of the artists sculptures.
...Musée National Picasso. A great collection and very interesting exhibit of photographs of the artist in his studio.
...L'Arc. A restaurant/club that I wish I would have gone to! It is on the roof of a building right by the Arc de Triomphe.

There are so many other things I know I am forgetting to mention as well, but the list could go on and on. I have so many great memories!

Now that I am home, I realize how much Paris meant to me and changed me. (Watch out--cheesy reflections to follow!!!). I learned so much about myself. I learned that I could have confidence speaking another language even when I make mistakes, and that I could go out of my way and out of my comfort zone to speak it with strangers, friends, coworkers, and especially Marion, with whom I practiced lengthy conversations. I also learned that many French people don't care if you are trying to learn French, they will still speak English to you... you just have to try to get over that and be persistent! I learned that I could be independent and live in a big city and navigate and discover new places everyday on my own. I also learned how to walk a million miles a day and deal with train strikes. I learned that I could teach, with no prior experience, and that I could really help my students learn. I learned that I could be patient and invest in real friendships with French coworkers as well as being accepted into families for whom I babysat and tutored (it's true, you can make French friends if you put the time in!). I also learned that being neighbors with Parisians doesn't mean they owe you any sort of neighborliness. I learned that life is as exciting, interesting, and full as you make it (whether you live in Paris or anywhere else). I learned that I love my friends that I went to Paris knowing as well as the ones I left Paris knowing. I learned just how much I love and need Andrew in my life.

I am so thankful that I was able to have this experience. It has made me realize how big and great and rich the world is, and that I can do anything.

I am now home for the summer before I go to law school this fall at.... PEPPERDINE! I am very excited to be moving back to Southern California and to be back studying at such a wonderful school. I am just going to relax this summer and enjoy some time off with family and friends. Please pray for me and my decisions and challenges to come, I need the love and support of my family and friends through this!

I'm that American.

Hossegor, France

I am now back in America, but I still have a few things to share about my last few weeks in Paris! I didn't have time before I left with last minute packing and such, but here it is...

A few weeks before I left France, I went to Hossegor with Andrew and some friends from HEC. Hossegor is a famous surf spot in France just north of Biarritz in the southwest of the country. We all rented a house right by the beach and surfed, cooked/ate some great meals together, and got some sun (finally!). I missed the beach and the ocean so much - it was a nice and relaxing break from city life. I only wished we could have stayed longer... all you need in life is good food, good weather, and good company!

Paris People

Coming back from Scotland last Monday, I brought Alex and Megan with me! Megan had a day and a half to spend here, and the volcanic ash (yes, it's still here!) finally permitted Alex to fly home Sunday. While they were here, we visited Versailles, went to the fondue place I have mentioned, a new club called Bus Palladium (free entry AND drinks for girls on Tuesday nights!), had Cinco de Mayo dinner at Arriba Mexico, went to Centre Pompidou, toured the Marais and had my favorite falafel sandwiches, went to Cafe Oz and (a new favorite) Le Violin Dingue for drinks and dancing, visited Sacre Coeur, and had a wonderful meal at Becca's host family's house for her birthday, to name a few things. I loved having them visit, and miss them already! It means so much to have friends who mean so much to me come and visit even when I live so far away. Also, I was able to meet up with a friend from high school who was visiting Paris, Ben Jackson! It was great to see him again and meet his roommate Rob while they were here.

Hall of Mirrors, Versailles.

Le Refuge des Fondues

Andrew's birthday was Saturday, so we spent the day in Champ de Mars, had dinner at Le Relais Gascon in Montmartre (best salads I have ever had, actually everyone said their food was fantastic), and went to Pointe Éphémère for drinks and dancing. Point Éphémère is a great concert venue/art exhibit/bar/club/house party type of place off of Canal St. Martin. It was such a fun place, and we want to go back to see some concerts (they have one nearly every day!). Happy Birthday, Andrew! I love you incredibly.

St. Andrews, Scotland

After leaving the south of France, I traveled up to St. Andrews to see Chris, who goes to St. Andrews University. Our friends from Pepperdine Alex, Natalie, and Megan also came to meet us there after visiting London. Let me just say that we did our year anniversary of graduating from college right. It was a weekend of college all over again... meeting tons of Chris' (great) friends, going to pubs, polo matches, creepy cult-like rituals that apparently all old English schools have, tea time, eating traditional Scottish meal of haggis and oat cakes, running on the beach, seeing old ruins... I had one of the best weekend with these friends and just seeing a part of Scotland. Thanks Chris for being a fantastic host!

Chris's flat on South Street.

Chris's room - so great! He fit all 4 of us girls in here.

St. Andrews University May 1st ritual (later at 4 a.m. Chris jumped into the ocean... freezing!).

The Quad, St. Andrew's University.

The Lizard - St. Andrews one and only club.

Traditional Scottish meal: oat cakes, potatoes, and haggis (you don't want to know what's in this).
We love our tea time - Bibi's Cafe.

Bibi's Bakery - great cupcakes!

St. Andrews University polo match. Apparently Prince William (former student) was here at some point but we missed him (!).

It's not really Scotland until you hear some bagpipes.

Cogolin, St. Tropez, Le Lavandou, Port Cros

The beginning of the last week of April I went with Kay Sar and Norgay's family to the south of France. They have family friends who own a villa just outside of St. Tropez in Cogolin. The weather was BEAUTIFUL, the kids were so nice and everyone treated me like a part of the family, we ate great meals, and explored the coast! I was able to go with the family on a boat tour of St. Tropez, hang out on the beaches in Le Lavandou and St. Tropez, hike in the Cogolin mountains, take a ferry to the island called Porte Cros and hike there... it was a wonderful trip and I am so happy they invited me to go with them!

A Very Happy Birthday in Paris

So it turns out that the ash cloud did in fact ruin our trip to Mallorca. We were really bummed because we went all the way to the airport only to be turned right back around home. However, Emily, Becca and I decided to treat our time in Paris still as vacation and make the most of it. The weather was mid-high 60s all week and sunny, so we were very lucky!

Long story short, we... picnicked in Champ de Mars park... went to the Versailles gardens (with FOZZIE!)... had the BEST Spanish dinner prepared by Kara and her friend from Le Cordon Bleu, Hayley, (paella, sangria, stuffed peppers included) to make us feel better for missing out on our Spanish vacation... explored Chinatown Paris for my birthday lunch, then went bowling on rue Mouffetard that night... rented Velib's and biked through Paris up to Canal St. Martin, had a great pizza lunch at Al Taglio, drinks at Charlie Birdy (GREAT happy hour), and clubbing at Showcase (under Pont Alexandre III) for Becca's birthday... and discovered REAL MEXICAN FOOD in Paris at Arriba Mexico! Never thought I would be saying that!!!

It really was a wonderful week despite the change in plans, and I had a great 23rd birthday. But being 22 was a great age too. I graduated from college, moved to Paris, learned French/how to teach/how to function in another country, decided to go to law school (more on that decision to come), fell more in love with Andrew... a few big milestones. I know that my 23rd year of life will bring with it many more exciting things to come as well!

lessons learned from volcanic ash

Over here in Europe, the world has literally come to a standstill. No one can fly out or in, people are stranded and away from their loved ones... and the cancellation of my birthday trip to Mallorca tomorrow morning is imminent. All of this from a volcano eruption in Iceland?!?!

Makes you think... we humans like to believe we are in control of our lives, that we have tamed nature into a civilized world. Well guess what? We are not God. This reminder from Eyjafjallajokull dumbfounded the airline industry and the world. For me it is a reminder that I need to trust the one who created everything and let that be enough.

Besides, with weather like we are having in Paris, it is hard to complain.
